For a new B.Tech. graduate getting placed with International powerhouse like IBM is no mean feat on a good day. The achievement is more remarkable in these unprecedented times when the industry, and thereby the fortunes of freshers, are reeling under the heavy impact of the pandemic. Chinju Mary George of NIIT University, who got placed with IBM as Data Scientist for a handsome package of Rs. 7.81 LPA says, “It is a dream come true for me. I couldn’t have imagined it without NIIT University and its consistent tie up with IBM.”

The University’s industry network is renowned. But the transformation of aspirants into industry ready professionals for even the toughest of times requires all round preparation. Chinju asserts that it begins with the carefully curated curriculum, which is built on through several initiatives. “The facilities like IT labs to the library, management club activities to guest lectures with industry experts; every effort by the university is top notch. But keeping the last semester of the curriculum for internship so that we get solid industry experience, is pure genius,” she stresses.

In fact, it was through her internship with IBM that the Surat girl landed the career defining placement opportunity. Chinju sheds light on the two day placement process that began with Gamify round, which was a Cognitive ability test followed by a Personality test. “For the Coding round we were given two questions on Hackerrank while the English test was quite straightforward language skills. We had three interviewers from IBM for the interview round, which revolved around the projects I had done, and technical skills,” she remembers.

According to Chinju, the interview round was less intimidating than she had imagined. But she also benefited from the confidence she had gained working on projects right from the first year. She believes it taught her about team work and time management, which led to her seamless transition into the professional world. “The placement department guided us by organizing aptitude and personality development classes. Months before the companies arrived we were given an option to come to campus and build our social and interpersonal skills,” she adds.

For Chinju, to remain calm under pressure is the most important quality she has gained during her four years at BTech. It’s this attribute that she will rely on the most as she dives into the professional world with a big splash.
