NIIT University holds its first Women’s Cricket League - NUWCL

Date: February 16 2025 onwards

Time: 6:30 pm onwards

Venue: Cage Cricket Ground

NU organised the first ever Women’s Cricket League – NUWCL, starting February 16, 2025. The matches were played in Cage Cricket Ground at 6:00 pm daily. This exciting initiative aims to celebrate the talent, passion, and determination of female athletes, providing them with a platform to showcase their skills and compete in a professionally organized environment.

NUWCL Structure

The first NUWCL followed the following structure:

  • Franchises Galore: 7 teams competes for the ultimate glory!
  • Team Dynamics: Each franchise comprises 8 to 10 players, including 2 committee members.
  • League Showdown: Every team plays each other in the league stage.
  • Match Format: 8-over matches for short and thrilling contests!

The inaugural NUWCL (NIIT University Women’s Cricket League) has been a historic milestone in the promotion and celebration of women’s sports, bringing together talented athletes, dedicated teams, and passionate supporters. The league featured 9 dynamic teams, each showcasing their unique strengths and strategies over the course of 21 thrilling matches. The tournament provided a platform not only for fierce competition but also for empowerment, highlighting the immense potential of women in sports and fostering a spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship throughout. From the very first ball bowled to the last boundary hit, the league captivated everyone involved, demonstrating that women’s cricket is a force to be reckoned with.

The final day saw Shadow Strikers triumphing as the champions, their determination, strategy, and team spirit carrying them to victory in a hard-fought final. The King Fishers, despite being edged out in the finals, gave an outstanding performance, earning the runner-up position and showcasing their resilience and grit. Individual performances throughout the tournament were exceptional, with Rishika being named the Highest Wicket Taker for her impressive bowling displays, while Kumkum earned the title of Best Batsman for her remarkable consistency and ability to turn games in her team’s favor with the bat.

The success of the tournament would not have been possible without the leadership and support of several key figures. A special thank you goes to Major General AK Singh, whose guidance and dedication ensured the smooth conduct of the tournament and played a pivotal role in its realization.

The tournament also benefited from the expertise and commitment of the umpires Ajay Singh and Suryakant from AXIS Bank Batch 17, whose professional officiating maintained the integrity of the matches. Additionally, Manjeet and Krish, the cricket coordinators, were instrumental in organizing and managing the logistics, ensuring everything ran smoothly and allowing the athletes to focus solely on their performance.

The NUWCL was more than just a competition; it was a celebration of the power of women in sports. It was a testament to the growing recognition of women’s cricket, offering a platform for athletes to showcase their skills while empowering them to break barriers and inspire the next generation of players. As the first season concludes, the impact of the NUWCL is undeniable, and we are already looking forward to future editions that will continue to uplift and celebrate the women in the world of cricket.
