Having the right skills and education is crucial but showcasing them effectively is just as important. Drafting your skills, education, and experience in the right manner will increase your chances of grabbing the job opportunity you are looking for.
Think of your resume as your professional ambassador—a document that highlights your expertise, competencies, and experience. It’s more than just a list of skills; it’s a tool to promote yourself and catch the eye of potential employers.
Your resume must stand out in this competitive job market and make a strong impression at first glance. Let us help you craft a resume that your employer wants to look at.
1. DESIGN A VISUALLY APPEALING RESUME
Think about how your resume looks. Is it visually appealing or too cramped? While it’s okay for your resume to go beyond one page, try to keep it concise. Prioritize fitting everything within a single page if possible. Ensure proper line spacing and choose a font that’s easy to read (Tip: Times New Roman is always a safe choice). Use headings to make sections stand out, and organize your content in reverse chronological order, with your most recent achievements listed first. You can explore different resume templates using tools like Microsoft Word Premium or Canva to find a style that suits you.
2. FIRST THINGS FIRST: NAME & CONTACT INFORMATION
Start your resume by making sure your name is easy to read and stands out from the rest of the text. It’s important to keep your contact details, like your phone number, Email and WhatsApp Number, accurate and up-to-date. Even with a great resume, if your contact information is incorrect, potential employers won’t be able to reach you easily. So, double-check these details to ensure they are correct and accessible. Don’t give your employer a hard time to connect with you.
3. CREATE A CLEAR AND CONCISE PROFESSIONAL SUMMARY
Begin your CV with a short and impactful professional summary. Think of it as your showcasing pitch—a quick way to introduce yourself and highlight your career achievements while subtly promoting your open and curious personality. This helps to make you appear approachable, friendly and well-rounded person, which can set you apart from other candidates. Also, customize the job role according to each JD. Different companies use different designation names for the same job role, so customize it accordingly.
4. ATTACH LINKS TO WHATEVER YOU ACHIEVED AND WORKED ON
Make sure to add links to any relevant work, like your blog, portfolio, or LinkedIn profile. You can also attach the links to the projects and research you did in college. These links give recruiters a deeper look at what you can do and provide more context about your skills. Plus, they can be great conversation starters during interviews. Having your work easily accessible online makes it easier for recruiters to understand your talents and get to know you better.
5. CUSTOMIZE YOUR RESUME ACCORDING TO THE EACH OPPORTUNITY
Well, it might look strange to you, but it’s quite a great way to grab your dream opportunity. Here, we do not mean to change the whole resume again and again; what we actually mean is to customize an already fixed template a little bit. For example, change the job role designation as per JD, customize a few lines as per the company’s requirements, and add some other skills if you have, according to the job demand. This step is very important for getting noticed by the employer.
6. ADD EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Remember to include any extra activities you’ve done beyond your usual work. For example, if you were the head boy in your school or college, then write it down as it shows that you have leadership skills. If you have won any football matches in your college, then write it down as it shows that you are active, competitive, and a winner. This doesn’t just show recruiters more about you but also helps them see what specific skills you have demonstrated.
7. LAST BUT NOT THE LEAST – PROOFREAD EVERYTHING
We all make mistakes, so it is always safe to proofread your resume once again and check for grammatical errors. To play extremely safe, have someone thoroughly review your resume to ensure that it sounds good and meets all the requirements! You don’t want to be rejected because of poor grammar or vocabulary, right?
