World Environment Day 2023

NU celebrates World Environment Day 2023

Date : June 5, 2023
Time: Morning and Evening (5:00 pm)
Venue: Online and MR301

NIIT University, already a champion of sustainable living since inception, as stated in its Vision & Mission Statement and attested by its green campus celebrated the World Environment Day on June 5 2023.

The World Environment Day is celebrated every year on June 5 to raise awareness about the importance of protecting the earth, our only home.  It has been in practice since 1972 when the first World Environment Day was announced by the United Nations.  Although, celebrated on one day, it is important to make commitments to protect the environment and put them in action.

This year, it is hosted by Côte d’Ivoire and the theme is Solutions to Plastic Pollution which we all know is a serious issue. You can read about it at  https://www.unep.org/news-and-stories/story/cote-divoire-sets-sights-plastic-pollution

An astonishing number of 500 billion plastic bags are used worldwide with the average life of a plastic bag being 15 minutes.  There are other such figures you can read about and mull over at https://www.niti.gov.in/life

India, recognizing that the major contribution to environment pollution is human lifestyle, has proposed a holistic approach to be adopted called LiFE – Lifestyle for Environment at the UN’s climate change conference – COP26 (26th annual event of the Conference of the Parties) that focuses on bringing in changes in individual behaviour.  Take a  look at http://missionlife-moefcc.nic.in/ to arrive at your own set of best practices leading to local and finally global change.

To keep the deteriorating climate change under control, we have to keep global temperature from exceeding 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels failing which we enter into a phase of irreversible climate change.  Hence the importance for commitments at all levels and by each one of us.

NU celebrated the day with a quiz on World Environment Day and followed it by deliberations to renew its commitment to the environment.
